Abstract
The article examines the development of the coal chemical industry in Russia through the lens of various and contradictory trends. The limiting factors of its development are revealed. They include competitive relationships with other energy sources in the face of low natural gas prices or falling oil prices; uneven demand for energy products throughout the year, as the coal-to-natural gas industry can only operate at full capacity in the winter; a market imbalance causes a drop in the prices of the respective products in the markets for coal-to-gas conversion by-products; environmental protection pressure; a lack of funds in the context of the industry’s innovative nature. The factors of competitiveness and industry prospects are described, such as the availability of coal as a basic resource in the national economy; a high level of product diversification in the industry, as well as a large number of related products; prices for processed coal products are higher than coal prices; The industry’s pronounced innovative nature, conjugation with scientific research, including domestic one; the potential to serve as a worthy substitute for other energy resources in the face of the threat of depletion of currently more efficient resources or the emergence of an unfavorable market conjuncture.Several conditions for the promising growth of the industry are identified.
