Abstract

The article is dedicated to the analysis of the features of the development of a key segment of the Soviet economy – the coal industry during the Great Patriotic War. The study reveals the duality of the period: a combination of unprecedented labour heroism and patriotism with the tragic consequences of enormous human losses and extreme working conditions. The paper examines the key aspects of the functioning of the coal industry in 1941-1945, including: the evacuation of mining equipment and specialists; the restoration and launch of mines in the Kuzbass, Karaganda and other regions; the adaptation of production under conditions of personnel and resource shortages. Special attention is paid to: the tragic consequences of the occupation of coal-producing regions; the role of retired miners and women who replaced workers who went to the front; the introduction of innovative methods of coal mining and transportation under extreme conditions. The article also explores the factors that enabled the Soviet coal industry not only to ?survive? but also to increase production during a critically important period for the country. The author concludes that the experience of operating coal mines during wartime became the most important foundation for the country’s post-war development.
