Abstract

This article analyzes transformation of the global coal market in the context of the fourth energy transition to renewable energy sources and increasing sanctions pressure. It examines the key trends in coal consumption and production, with a particular focus on the Asia-Pacific region as the main driver of the growing demand. Particular attention is paid to the position of the Russian Federation in the global market, i.e. reorientation of the export flows, competitive advantages of the Russian coal, as well as institutional and technological measures to adapt to the new conditions. The study employs a system-based approach that combines a quantitative analysis of the coal market dynamics with a qualitative assessment of the competitive edge of the Russian Federation. Promising directions have been identified for the development of the coal industry. A conclusion is made that Russia’s export potential will be preserved despite changes in the demand structure and stricter requirements for the environmental performance of the products.
