Abstract

This study aims to develop a conceptual model to integrate the sustainable development principles into the self-organizing management system of coal companies with due regard to the fragmentation of the industry’s economy. An analysis of current approaches to the sustainable development of coal companies, based on reviewing 54 publications from top-rated magazines for 2018-2023, reveals a number of unresolved issues related to the adaptation of goals, processes, and resources to volatile conditions of the regional markets and regulations. Terminology is proposed that reveals the specific features of the fragmentation nature of economy in the coal industry. The methodological section includes justification of fusing methodologies of the Santa Fe Institute and the Belgorod School of Synergetics to study the self-organization of management systems. A description is presented of a three-stage procedure to collect and analyze empirical data on sustainable development practices in 12 world-leading coal companies. The developed conceptual model and tools for its implementation were tested on 26 selected Russian coal companies. The key results include a growth of the sustainable development index by 18.6%, reduction of specific CO2 emissions by 12.4%, an increase in the level of social approval by 24.8%. All of these results are confirmed using the methods of statistical analysis (p < 0.05) and reveal the potential of applying the self-organization approach to sustainable development management. The theoretical and methodological contribution of the paper to the development of the corporate sustainability concept in conditions of fragmented economy, as well as the applied value of the proposed tools for coal companies are discussed in the discussion block. The prospects for the development of self-organization ideas are outlined for the context of decarbonization of the coal industry.
