Abstract
The first part of this article describes trends in coal industry operation in Russia and globally from the beginning of the 21st Century till the present day. The share of coal is determined in the balances of primary energy resources production and domestic consumption in the world and in Russia The consumption rates of primary energy resources worldwide and in the Russian Federation are analysed for the period of 2000-2022, as well as the existing coal market, including the production, imports, exports and consumption of coal. In order to determine Russia's long-term role in the global coal market for the perspective period and to assess the export-related risks of the Russian coal suppliers, it is necessary to forecast the industry's development up to 2050, both for the Russian Federation and for the main coal producing and consuming countries. This forecast will be presented in the second part of the article.
