Abstract

The paper discusses the dynamics of the digitalization processes in the fuel and energy complex of Russia in the late 20th - early 21st Centuries. The main stages as well as their features, results and significance are emphasized and explained. The first stage (1990-2005) was the transition to large-scale digitalization of the fuel and energy complex sectors, introduction of digital technologies into the business processes. The second stage (2006-2010) marked the beginning of the digital transformation of the fuel and energy complex sectors, which created the conditions for the transition to Industry 4.0. A distinctive feature of the second stage was the pilot industrial and partially mass introduction of production and management 'intelligent systems'. A conclusion is made that the digitalization processes have noticeably enhanced the competitiveness of the Russian fuel and energy complex, mitigated the challenges of energy security at the regional level, and reinforced Russia's importance as part of the international energy security.
