Abstract

The paper carries out the appraisal of coal and anthracite deposits in Russia’s Arctic zone: in the Komi Republic, Chukotka, Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Republic of Sakha. It also determines the significance of the development of Arctic coal deposits for solving the problem of energy supply to the vast Arctic territories of the Russian Arctic, the promising development of which is ensured by the use of coal as the most economical type of fuel, in comparison with hydrocarbon raw materials. The importance of the coal industry for the country’s economy and the world has been shown. Based on the research, it has been concluded that the Arctic high-quality coals base is able not only to fully meet the needs of the economy of the Russian Arctic’s regions, but also significantly strengthen Russia's position in world markets, primarily in Asian ones, as a major source of hard and coking coal. The transportation of coal fuel is provided by the ships of the Northern Sea Route. The paper defends the position that sharp increase in the significance of the Northern Sea Route is possible when solving several global problems such as building modern infrastructure along the Arctic coast, updating the nuclear icebreaker fleet, creating a space monitoring system. Murmansk as a main center of coal transshipment terminals in the Arctic, plays the key role in this process.
